Odd Ones In

Dispatch no. 566 — Dev Thoughts SS-20260417

If there’s one thing Stupendium Softworks knows, it’s that we’re an oddball. And with a writer’s room of people with backgrounds like game development, film, music, opera, animation, poetry, theater, and clinical psychology? That’s just how we like it.

The games industry is in a strange place right now.

Games want to be movies and television, and movies and television desperately want to be games. But our team identified early on that we’re not interested in trying to be anything except our own, possibly uncategorizable thing. Inspired by The Stupendium’s extensive experience with their YouTube channel and the use of film in games by studios like Remedy and Half Mermaid, Stupendium Softworks aims to use our combined multimedia chops to make one-of-a-kind games.

It’s really such a treat to get to work with a team so dedicated to trying something so new and unique. Much of what we’ve written together so far is also heavily influenced by interactive theater, inviting the player to really step into the story and become an active participant. When it comes to leading writer’s rooms, I like to lean on the individual strengths of each member and let them chase what they enjoy, find interesting, and want to try… and the team definitely hasn’t disappointed.

Our unique composition of established game writers and talented newcomers additionally creates opportunities for all of us to learn, grow, and get weird in a way that only we can.

Together we’re building something I don’t think games have ever seen before, and I’m sad I can’t tell you more.

At least… not yet.
